Invasion of the Greeks

Calling all GW guys – Fall rush has begun! Rush for Fraternities started on Monday, September 24th and continue thorough October 6th. For girls, sorority recruitment is October 4th through October 9th. GW has 32 nationally recognized fraternities and sororities as well as three fraternities that are unaffiliated with the university.

The percentage of students involved in Greek life is increasing. Last year it was at an all time high with 17% of the student body participating.

Katie Black, a sophomore, is one of those participants. “Rushing was a great experience,” she said. “Your pledge class becomes your group of best friends.”

But, Greek life does come at a price…literally. There is a $25 fee to rush and if one becomes initiated, the average cost is $800 for a sorority and $1000 for a fraternity.

So is it worth it? Erica Appelman, a junior at GW, seems to think so. “The opportunities that Greek life can present are some of the best on campus,” she said. “Besides the amazing friendships, one can land themselves a great internship through their sorority or fraternity.”

Also, the Pan-Hellenic Society at GW requires a minimum GPA of 2.3 for all Greeks although certain organizations have higher academic requirements.

The Greek community is opposed to ‘dirty rushing’ or convincing someone to join their fraternity or sorority. This allows each student to decide on their own which organization is right for them. All students who are interested should check out the events in the upcoming weeks and see what Greek life at GWU is all about!
