D.C. Sports Round-Up with Joe Lewis
In GW sports, the Men’s Basketball team won a preseason exhibition game last Saturday at home against West Georgia. The final score was 78 to 44. The game was the first public appearance for the 2009-2010 basketball program against another team. The season will officially begin on Sunday when the men travel south to face the North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawks.
In professional basketball, the Washington Wizards are on a 5 game losing streak. They lost 86 to 102 last Friday at Indiana. The Phoenix Suns came to the Verizon Center on Sunday and beat Washington 90 to 102. On Tuesday, the Wizards traveled to Miami where they lost to the Heat 76 to 90. The Wizards play their next game at home on Saturday against the Detroit Pistons. Tip-off is at 7 pm.
In Hockey, the Washington Capitals have won three straight games. Last Friday the Caps traveled to Florida and beat the Panthers 4 to1. Saturday, the Panthers visited the Verizon Center where the Caps won 7 to 4, with 5 goals in the third period. Wednesday night the Capitals beat the New York Islanders 5 to 4 at home. The game went into a shoot-out that lasted 11 rounds, the longest for any NHL game this season. Capitals Captain Chris Clark scored the game winning goal to end the shoot-out. So far, every match up this year between the Capitals and Islanders has required overtime. Alex Ovechkin is still out with an upper body injury, but he is expected to return soon. The Caps play again tonight at home against the Minnesota Wild. The puck drops at 7:00 pm.
Finally, in Football, the Washington Redskins lost last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. The final score was 17 to 31. Down 3 to 24 coming out of half time, the Redskins scored 2 unanswered touchdowns in the second half of the game. Atlanta running back Michael Turner sealed the win for the Falcons with a 58 yard touchdown run with only 1:42 left on the clock. Washington’s season record is now 2 and 6. The Redskins play again this Sunday at home against the Denver Broncos. Kick-off is at 1pm.
